Homeless & Migrant Services

Athens City Schools offers programs to students considered homeless and or migrant. Through federal funding, the System is able to provide unique programming, services, and often times goods, tailored specifically to the needs of homeless and migrant students to ensure the students are able to attend and succeed in the classroom.

Students who lack a permanent residence, reside in a shelter, share housing with others due to loss of housing or economic hardship, or those living in cars, parks, public spaces, abandoned buildings, substandard housing, bus or train stations, or similar settings are considered homeless.

A migrant student is defined as a child between the ages of three and 21 without a GED or high school diploma, who has moved in the preceding 36 months from across school district lines, has economic needs and has parents who are seasonally or temporarily employed in the agriculture, dairy or fishing industries.

The Tennessee Department of Education provides additional information regarding programs for homeless students on its website. The site also offers information on funding and resources available to migrant students.
